The right choice of scythe and snath, care and storage
How to choose the size of the scythe?
When choosing the size of a scythe, it is important to consider the type of terrain, physical condition and experience. Quick tips:
- 60 cm: Ideal for confined spaces full of obstacles. Suitable for shorter or less physically fit scythers, or children.
- 70 cm: Universal size suitable for various terrains. A good compromise between size and maneuverability.
- 75 cm: For more experienced scythers. Suitable for slightly larger areas.
- 80 cm: For physically fit users. Ideal for mowing larger areas such as meadows and gardens.
- 90 cm: For professionals and very experienced mowers. Designed for large open areas.
How to pick the right scythe?
Our range includes various models of Austrian scythes from the traditional manufacturer SCHRÖCKENFUX. The choice depends on your experience and the type of terrain:
- HARTSTAHL scythe:
- Ideal for difficult conditions and neglected land.
- Harder material that stays sharp for a long time but is more difficult to peen than other models.
- FUX scythe:
- A universal scythe suitable for various types of mowing, from garden lawns to larger meadows.
- The softer material is easy to peen and still holds its edge.
- FUX 2010 scythe:
- Specially designed for large areas with relatively small unevenness.
- Allows effective mowing with greater grass coverage in one stroke.
- Suitable for experienced mowers who need high efficiency on large areas.
- FUX bush scythe:
- Not intended for mowing grass, but for removing weeds and brushwood up to 1 cm thick.
- Unlike classic grass scythes, the bush scythe is only sharpened with a whetstone, using a coarse synthetic and then a fine natural whetstone.
Is there a scythe for left-handed people?
Yes, there is a scythe for left-handed people, and you can find it in our offer.
- If you are left-handed and a beginner at mowing, we recommend purchasing a standard scythe, as most left-handed people have no problem with the traditional scythe grip.
- With a left-handed scythe, you will not enjoy the charm of mowing in a group, because when mowing in a group, it is necessary that the grass always falls on the already mowed free area. You can only attach it to a snath designed for left-handed scythes.
- We recommend it only to those who have tried mowing with a standard scythe and cannot get used to it.
How to care for a scythe and keep it in good condition?
- After each use, it is important to thoroughly clean the scythe of soil and grass, ideally with water.
- After cleaning, it is essential to dry the scythe thoroughly to prevent rusting.
- Before winter, when the scythe is not used regularly, it is recommended to treat it with a protective oil such as Ballistol.
How to choose the size of the snath?
The size of the snath should correspond to the height of the scyther. We offer high-quality Austrian snaths made of ash wood in the following sizes:
- 130 cm: Designed for children or scythers with a height of 120 - 155 cm.
- 150 cm: Suitable for scythers with a height of 155 - 170 cm.
- 160 cm: For scythers with a height of 165 - 185 cm.
- 170 cm: Ideal for tall scythers with a height of 180-200 cm.
- 180 cm: Designed for scythers with a height of over 190 cm.
How to adjust the snath?
The handles of the snath should be positioned according to the following principles:
- Lower handle: Should be set at hip height.
- Upper handle: Position it at least one forearm's length above the lower handle.
If you have a snath with adjustable handles, try out the settings and adjust them to suit you.
How to care for and store your snath?
- Care: From time to time, it is advisable to use protective oil, varnish or another product designed for treating wood. These products help protect the wood from external influences and increase its service life.
- Storage: It is important to store the snath in a dry place. Moisture can cause damage or deformation.
- Winter: During the winter, when the snath is not in use, it is important to keep it in a dry environment. This will prevent damage due to moisture and cold.
