Austrian scythe FUX HARTSTAHL
Hand-forged, high-quality Austrian scythe for mowing grass is made from high-carbon steel. The versatile Hartstahl scythe is manufactured in the Austrian factory Schröckenfux with more than 475 years of tradition.
Thanks to high-quality steel and a wider blade, this scythe will last until the grim reaper comes for you. It is slightly harder to peen than other models from the Schröckenfux factory, but on the other hand, it stays sharp a little longer.
The wider, curved blade with a higher tip prevents damage to the cutting edge from stones. The HARTSHAL scythe can also be used for mowing very young shoots or weeds. In this case, it does not need to be peened, but only sharpened with a whetstone.
What size scythe should you choose?
- 60 cm - a scythe suitable for confined spaces or when it is necessary to avoid obstacles such as trees or stones. Also suitable for shorter, younger or physically weaker mowers.
- 65 cm - a handy scythe, for women and younger mowers, a compromise between 60 and 70 cm.
- 70 cm - a versatile scythe for mowing grass in a wide variety of terrains, suitable for most mowers.
- 75 cm - for more experienced mowers, a compromise between 70 and 80 cm.
- 80 cm - scythe suitable for physically fit people for mowing larger areas such as meadows and large gardens in less demanding terrain.
- 90 cm - professional scythe, for experienced users and athletic mowers.
Fux Hartsthal Austrian scythe - basic features:
Unlike rolled products found in hardware stores, Austrian FUX scythes are hand-forged. They are lighter than conventional scythes (150 g for an 80 cm blade), the material is thinner and they are much easier to peen.
The tang made of solid material is used to attach the scythe to the snath. It is equipped with a knob that fits into a hole in the snath, which prevents the scythe from moving sideways.
The upper edge of the scythe is reinforced with a rib. This gives the scythe strength and stability and helps throw the cut grass to the side.
The raised tip allows for mowing even on uneven terrain and is reinforced to withstand any impact with obstacles.

The complexity of production is reflected in the higher price. However, considering the incomparable quality and long service life of several decades, investing in a high-quality scythe ultimately pays off despite the higher initial costs.
Additional services
Although the scythes leave the factory with a sticker saying mähfertig, i.e. ready for mowing, this is not entirely true. The scythes are machine-peened and coated with a protective varnish. The Czech term sekání, meaning chopping, is more appropriate for working with such a scythe.
To ensure that you enjoy mowing and do not exert yourself unnecessarily, it is necessary to remove 0.5–1 cm of the protective coating along the entire blade on both sides and then hand-peen the scythe.
