The scythe – a tool with a story
For hundreds of years, the scythe was a symbol of agriculture, and just as a knight had to know how to wield a sword, a farmer had to know how to handle a scythe.
Ore mined from the depths of the earth, water driving heavy hammers, fire and human sweat have shaped this tool to perfection over hundreds of years. While swords can now only be admired in museums, mowing with a scythe is experiencing a renaissance.
Which scythe should you buy?
Before buying a scythe, you should consider several factors, especially the correct blade length. The choice of blade length depends on the type of vegetation you intend to mow, and the condition of the scyther should also be taken into account. As a general rule, the older, longer and drier the grass, the shorter the scythe blade should be. Short 60 cm scythes are suitable for confined spaces or for mowing along walls or trees. With a 70 or 80 cm scythe, you can easily mow even larger gardens or meadows.
The right size of a scythe
A wooden handle with a blade (scythe) attached to it is called a snath. The scythe and snath form an inseparable pair, and the size of the scythe and the length of the snath must be matched to the height of the scyther. Our range includes snaths of various lengths with handles that can be adjusted to suit any body type. We will be happy to help you adjust the snath.
It doesn't end with the scythe
Other essential equipment for a scyther includes a whetstone and a whetstone holder, in which you will sharpen the blade during mowing.
